Friday English Tips with Tim - Baseball Food
Dicas de Inglês Toda Sexta-Feira com Tim – Baseball Food
Hey, it´s Tim here, thanks a lot for the e-mails you sent me telling me that you liked this idea of these Friday English talks and giving ideias of topics for us to talk about. And I´ve received a lot of answers already, but keep on sending them; ok ?
@>---- keep on = continue
One of the things people ask me to talk about is American culture; so that will be one of our segments. Then send me other e-mails telling me what other segments you would have us talk about, like pronunciation or, it could be..., I´m gonna read e-mails and answer e-mails, too; so you send me a message telling me what you would like me to talk about every week; ok?
@>---- you would have us talk about = sobre as quais você gostaria que conversássemos
So here goes, today our first culture talk.
Ok, what is more American than baseball? Baseball is considered the national sport of the United States. So, and what´s interesting, this week is the first game in the baseball season in the United States; so it´s very pertinent.
@>---- game = jogo
@>---- season = estação
What I want to talk about today is what we eat at ball games.
1 - Hot dogs.
We can´t forget those hot dogs! Americans eat lots of those.
Here´s an interesting thing: Babe Ruth... Who´s Babe Ruth? You´ll have to research that one, but it has to do with baseball, and it´s very American. Babe Ruth once gobbled down a dozen hot dogs and eight bottles of soda between games of doubleheader.
@>---- research = pesquisar
@>---- has to do with = tem a ver com
@>---- gobble down = (ver no próximo parágrafo)
@>---- a dozen = uma dúzia de
@>---- soda = refrigerante
@>---- doubleheader = dois jogos consecutivos em um só evento
What´s gobbled down? Hum...You don´t have our phrasal verbs with G product yet, do you? Ok, “gobbled down” means “devoured”. He devoured a dozen hot dogs and eight bottles of soda between games of a doubleheader.
What´s a doubleheader? Check that out, too. Do some research about baseball, and you'll know what a doubleheader means.
@>---- means = significa
2. Peanuts.
Another thing Americans eat during ball games is peanuts. There are all kinds of peanuts. Raw. Roasted. Shelled. Unshelled. So...they like to eat those. Be careful, though, because a lot of people are allergic to peanuts. And some stadiums even have peanut-free games, because they know a lot of people are allergic to peanuts. But anyways...
@>---- peanuts = amendoim
@>---- raw = cru
@>---- roasted = torrado(s)
@>---- shelled = com a casca
@>---- unshelled = sem a casca
@>---- peanut-free = sem amendoins
@>---- but anyways = bem, de qualquer jeito... (voltando ao assunto)
3. Cracker Jack
And, finally, one of the things that they sell at baseball ball games are cracker jacks. Basically, popcorn mixed with molasses and peanuts. It's all mixed together; and it's very good. And it usually comes with some prize or card inside that children like to collect.
@>---- that they sell = que vendem
@>---- molasses = melado
@>---- prize = prêmio
And what's interesting about Cracker Jacks is that, although it's a brand name, it's been immortalized in a song called "Take Me Out to the Ball Game". This is an early-20th century song which became the unofficial anthem of baseball. The song is traditionally sung during the seventh-inning stretch of a baseball game, and fans are encouraged to sing along.
@>---- although = apesar de que
@>---- brand name = marca
@>---- song = canção
@>---- 20th century = do século 20
@>---- unofficial = não oficial
@>---- anthem = “hino”
@>---- sing – sang – sung = cantar (e suas conjugações)
@>---- inning = ciclo (em beisebol)
@>---- stretch = “espreguiçamento” (intervalo para se “esticar”)
@>---- fans = torcedores
@>---- sing along = cantar juntos
So I encourage you to sing along as we play this song that is being sung in a stadium during the seventh inning. And then you can learn the lyrics on our site; and even below our video on our site, I'll post some other videos that teach you this song. Ok?
@>---- encourage you = te encorajo
@>---- lyrics = letras da música
@>---- even = até
@>---- below = abaixo
Take Me Out to the Ball Game
Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd;
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack,
I don't care if I never get back.
Let me root, root, root for the *home team,
If they don't win, it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game.
*Cardinals [O "home-team" (o time da casa) neste jogo]
So that's my tip for today. Keep on sending me those e-mails telling me what you want me to talk about. And I'll see you next week. Have a great weekend! Bye bye!
@>---- keep on = contiue
