Hello! This is Tim Barrett again with another tip on how to take your English to the next level, with our third tip today. Today I want to talk about a concept called – we’ll call it…uh… “_________ your swing”, because that’s what tennis players call it.

Trusting your swing. What does that mean? Well, scientist, people that study performance, they realize that there are two kinds of ___________ . There’s a training mindset, and that’s what we talked about last week, when you have to practice, and… uh… like a tennis player, for example, he has to practice his ___________, how to hold the racket, how to hit the ball, where he’s ___________ at, and all that kind of stuff…, how he’s going to put effect on the ball. But then, when he performs, when he’s really playing a game, he has to forget about that kind of mindset of training, and he just has to perform – what they call the “trusting mindset”.

(That’s why they call…) they tell tennis players that they have to trust their swing. So we have to ___________ that to English, too. There are two kinds of practice. There’s, uh… Or two kinds of, (uh) let’s say, ___________. There’s a practicing mode, or we’ll call it the training mode, where you practice, you learn vocabulary, study your grammar, you do your Tim and Tammy exercises, working on your phrasal verbs and ___________ expressions, and all that.

But then you have to ___________ situations where you’re just using your English. And in these moments, you’re in your trusting mode. You throw out any ___________ , or you stop being your school teacher and ___________ yourself all the time, and you just talk; you just concentrate on ___________ your message ___________ and communicating. Don’t think, “boy, let me use this word, or let me try to use a phrasal verb…”; no, you just talk. You just ___________ . And, if you practice, if you do those focused practice(s), when you do perform, it will come out a lot easier; but you don’t worry about it.

They say here, for example, in this book… This book talks about that a lot. It’s called (let me see if you can see it here), it’s called “overachievers”. “Overachievement”, excuse me. He talks about the training mindset and the trusting mindset. He says here:

“To perform exceptionally – whether it's hitting a golf ball pure, closing a critical deal, ___________ ________ a big sale, moving an audience with a violin concerto, or even transplanting a heart - requires you to be in that same state of mind, empty of all doubt, [without any thought about the mechanics of what your doing.]”

So they call it, like, “it-doesn’t matter” mindset. Like, you’re not worried about making ___________ . You’re not worried about speaking correctly. You’re just talking; ok?

“You can not pull up all those years of education, training, and experience in your memory as you perform – that's the "Training" Mindset. In the Trusting Mindset, you have to let all that expertise be there instinctively. Our ability is maximized when we let our skills do the work, not our heads.”

Because the idea is, and we’re not going to talk about the science ___________ all this… but the idea is you don’t have enough neuro-connections to be thinking about all these things at the same time. When you’re performing, you just have to perform _____________ without worrying about “Oh, I have to think of this, I have to think of the proper grammar”; you just talk.

“Our ability is maximized when we let our skills do the work, not our heads. As professional golfers like to say, you have to trust your swing. You just have to toss the keys…”

He’s talking about an experience [experiment] he does with his students where he has them ___________ their car keys to each other. And they throw it perfectly. One throws it, the other catches it; and they do that several times without the keys ___________ on the floor. But then he says, “Ok. Tomorrow we’re going to have a competition, whoever can throw the key perfectly, or the most times without letting it __________ , wins a big prize.” Well, the next day, they start ___________ the key, they can’t throw it right, they can’t catch it right. Why? Because they’re concentrating too _________ on how they’re throwing it; they’re worried about it. So that’s what he’s talking about here.

“As professional golfers like to say, you have to trust your swing. You just have to toss the keys – pure Trusting Mindset.”

So that’s what you need to do. You have to… And that’s something you have to ___________, too. If you’re afraid, for example, to talk on the phone with people at the office or something; just _________ ________ the phone and talk to them. Don’t worry about “Oh, am I going to say it right? What phrase should I say?” You can practice that when you’re in your Training Mode, or your Training Mindset. But sometimes you just have to simulate, or _________ _________ , situations and just be in your Trusting Mode. The Training Mode when you practice, the Trusting Mode when you just perform. Trusting your swing. What does that mean? Well, scientist, people that study performance, they realize that there are two kinds of mindsets. There’s a training mindset, and that’s what we talked about last week, when you have to practice, and… uh… like a tennis player, for example, he has to practice his swing, how to hold the racket, how to hit the ball, where he’s aiming at, and all that kind of stuff…, how he’s going to put effect on the ball. But then, when he performs, when he’s really playing a game, he has to forget about that kind of mindset of training, and he just has to perform – what they call the “trusting mindset”.

==> performance = desempenho, apresentação, execução, atuação
==> mindset = atitude mental, mentalidade
==> training mindset = mentalidade de treinamento
==> practice = praticar
==> swing = arremesso, "tacada"
==> hold = segurar
==> racket = raquete
==> hit (the ball) = acertar (a bola)
==> aim at = mirar (em)
==> all that kind of stuff = e todo este tipo de coisa
==> put effect on the ball = colocar efeito na bola
==> perform = executar; atuar; apresentar
==> what they call = o que chamam de
==> trusting mindset = mentalidade (estado mental) de confiança

(That’s why they call…) they tell tennis players that they have to trust their swing. So we have to apply that to English, too. There are two kinds of practice. There’s, uh… Or two kinds of, (uh) let’s say, modes. There’s a practicing mode, or we’ll call it the training mode, where you practice, you learn vocabulary, study your grammar, you do your Tim and Tammy exercises, working on your phrasal verbs and everyday expressions, and all that.

==> apply = aplicar
==> kinds = tipos
==> mode = modo
==> training mode = modo de treinamento

But then you have to simulate situations where you’re just using your English. And in these moments, you’re in your trusting mode. You throw out any judgment, or you stop being your school teacher and correcting yourself all the time, and you just talk; you just concentrate on getting your message across and communicating. Don’t think, “boy, let me use this word, or let me try to use a phrasal verb…”; no, you just talk. You just communicate. And, if you practice, if you do those focused practice(s), when you do perform, it will come out a lot easier; but you don’t worry about it.

==> without any thought = sem qualquer pensamento
==> it doesn’t matter = não importa
==> worried = preocupado

==> pull up, phrasal verb = trazer a tona, “lembrar”
==> as you perform = equanto você se “apresenta”, enquanto você “executa”/”faz”
==> let all the expertise be there = deixa todo este conhecimento estar lá
==> instinctively = instintivamente, de forma natural
==> is maximized = alcança o ponto maximo
==> let your skills do the work = deixar suas habilidades “fazerem o trabalho”
==> head = cabeça

Because the idea is, and we’re not going to talk about the science behind all this… but the idea is you don’t have enough neuro-connections to be thinking about all these things at the same time. When you’re performing, you just have to perform instinctively without worrying about “Oh, I have to think of this, I have to think of the proper grammar”; you just talk.

==> neural connections = conecções neurológicas
==> at the same time = ao mesmo tempo
==> proper grammar = gramática correta
==> toss the keys = jogar as chaves

He’s talking about an experience [experiment] he does with his students where he has them throw their car keys to each other. And they throw it perfectly. One throws it, the other catches it; and they do that several times without the keys falling on the floor. But then he says, “Ok. Tomorrow we’re going to have a competition, whoever can throw the key perfectly, or the most times without letting it drop, wins a big prize.” Well, the next day, they start dropping the key, they can’t throw it right, they can’t catch it right. Why? Because they’re concentrating too hard on how they’re throwing it; they’re worried about it. So that’s what he’s talking about here.

==> experiment = experiência (o certo seria ter falado “experiment”, não “experience”, neste caso. É um erro comum entre nós falantes da língua inglesa! ) ;-)
==> throw = jogar
==> to each other = um ao outro
==> catch = pegar
==> without the keys falling = sem as chaves caírem
==> without letting it drop = sem deixar cair
==> wins a prize = ganha um prêmio
==> drop the keys = derrubar as chaves
==> concentrating too hard = concentrando demais

“As professional golfers like to say, you have to trust your swing. You just have to toss the keys – pure Trusting Mindset.”

So that’s what you need to do. You have to… And that’s something you have to train, too. If you’re afraid, for example, to talk on the phone with people at the office or something; just get on the phone and talk to them. Don’t worry about “Oh, am I going to say it right? What phrase should I say?” You can practice that when you’re in your Training Mode, or your Training Mindset. But sometimes you just have to simulate, or act out, situations and just be in your Trusting Mode. The Training Mode when you practice, the Trusting Mode when you just perform.
