How to Take Your English to the Next Level – Tip #2
Fill In the Blanks (Preencha as Lacunas)
Hi, this is Tim from Tim and Tammy Teach. And the reason I started by playing the piano today was to tell you about a tip that most piano players already know about. As a matter of fact, I already talked about this with Ana Luiza from www.inglesonline.com.br in our interview we did together. She plays the piano, too; so she knows this also. But I think every language learner, and especially you, that wants to learn English, I think you should ________ this to your language learning, too.
When someone starts playing the piano, they right away, in their first lessons, they already want to start playing music pieces of their favorite song. But soon they _______ _______ that they have a lot of exercises that they have to do, and _______ _______ , and practice every day.
For example, there's this one practice book that most piano players know about. It's _______ around for years, and was written by this ________-looking man here. It's called Hanon. See? Hanon. What it is, it's a book of exercises... let me see if I can show you here... some of the exercises. Here's number 1. The easiest to _________ with. See those exercises? Go(s) up and down the piano. There's exercise number 2. Let me play the first one for you to see.
So, anyways, that's an element that has to be part of any piano player's routine; and that is: _________ ! You have to practice every day; not only songs that you like to play and your favorite songs, but you have to practice exercises and keep on repeating so you can get your ___________ right, so you can... uh... so when you finally do sit down to play the piano then it _________ _______ a lot easier.
The same thing has to be applied with your English learning. And I will call it "focused practice". Focused practice. You need to practice something of your English every day. You can do that by _________ _______ your flashcards with the new words, new vocabulary, that you are learning, you're trying to remember. That will help you with your vocabulary.
You need to do exercises where you _________ ______ repeating sentences. For example, some people are familiar with..ah...lab drills. They're exercises where you listen to a sentence, then you repeat it, then you hear another word, you have to incorporate that in(to) the sentence.
So, anyways, that's called "focused practice".
Another thing I tell my students to do is to ______ _______ the dialogues in their books. Listen to each sentence. Pause it; repeat it. You have to do that in a focused way.
It's different than when you're just talking... (I'll talk about that next week.)... when you're just using your English, that's one thing. Another thing is "focused practice".
That is, for example, where our product, our method on our site, comes in _________ . We call it the "Método dos Missionários" that (where)... we have the whole story with all the phrasal verbs, but then you listen to each sentence, you hear it in Portuguese, then there's a beep, you have a little space there, then you have to say the word...ah...the sentence in English before you hear that answer.
That method there is to help you really practice and really get down (pat) those sentences.
I have my students do that every week. I have them take home a chapter of one of the stories, and then they practice it during the week. And then they come to class, and I/we _______ ________ it together in class.
Now I know that's not the _________ (and) _________ element of learning English; but it's a very important element. You have to have focused practice.
So do that! Try to incorporate every day some kind of focused practice in(to) your English studies. And I guarantee you that, ______ ______ _________ , you'll see a great improvement in your English. Now I know it's not something that's fun. It's not fun for us piano players to play Hanon, either; but it's part of the process. And I guarantee you that if you do that you'll start seeing a difference in your English. When you finally do have to speak to someone, it will just come out a lot easier. Ok?
Well, expect me next week with a new tip. And have a great weekend! Bye bye! Thank you!
How to Take Your English to the Next Level – Tip #1 (SCRIPT and EXPLANATIONS)
Hi, this is Tim from Tim and Tammy Teach. And the reason I started by playing the piano today was to tell you about a tip that most piano players already know about. As a matter of fact, I already talked about this with Ana Luiza from www.inglesonline.com.br in our interview we did together. She plays the piano, too; so she knows this also. But I think every language learner, and especially you, that wants to learn English, I think you should apply this to your language learning, too.
==> tip = dica
==> (already) know about = (já) sabem a respeito [literalmente]; (já) conhecem
==> as a matter of fact = aliás [no sentido que usei acima]
==> interview = entrevista
==> play the piano = tocar o piano
==> learner = aprendiz, estudante
==> apply = aplicar
When someone starts playing the piano, they right away, in their first lessons, they already want to start playing music pieces of their favorite song. But soon they find out that they have a lot of exercises that they have to do, and work on, and practice every day.
==> right away = imediatamente
==> music pieces = peças de música
==> work on, phrasal verb = trabalhar em [literalmente]; praticar/trabalhar (em cima de algo) para melhorar o desempenho
==> practice = praticar
For example, there's this one practice book that most piano players know about. It's been around for years, and was written by this austere-looking man here. It's called Hanon. See? Hanon. What it is, it's a book of exercises... let me see if I can show you here... some of the exercises. Here's number 1. The easiest to begin with. See those exercises? Go(s) up and down the piano. There's exercise number 2. Let me play the first one for you to see.
==> it's been around for years [present perfect] = está em circulação (existência) por anos
==> austere-looking man = homen de aparência severa (austere)
==> to begin with = com a qual começar [literalmente]; para começar
==> go up and down the piano = sobem e descem o piano
So, anyways, that's an element that has to be part of any piano player's routine; and that is: practice! You have to practice every day; not only songs that you like to play and your favorite songs, but you have to practice exercises and keep on repeating so you can get your fingering right, so you can... uh... so when you finally do [este "do" aqui é para ênfase] sit down to play the piano then it comes out a lot easier.
==> anyways (informal) = Em conversação, "anyway(s)" é usado para mudar o assunto, voltar ao assunto, ou chegar ao ponto mais importante da conversa
==> practice = prática
==> keep on = "ficar" (persistir); continuar
==> get (your fingering) right = acertar o dedilhado
==> sit down = sentar-se
==> it comes out a lot easier = sai bem mais fácil
The same thing has to be applied with your English learning. And I will call it "focused practice". Focused practice. You need to practice something of your English every day. You can do that by going over your flashcards with the new words, new vocabulary, that you are learning, you're trying to remember. That will help you with your vocabulary.
==> applied = aplicado
==> focused practice = prática focalizada
==> go over = passar por (uma lição, cartões de vocabulário, etc.)
You need to do exercises where you keep on repeating sentences. For example, some people are familiar with..ah...lab drills. They're exercises where you listen to a sentence, then you repeat it, then you hear another word, you have to incorporate that in(to) the sentence.
==> are familiar with = [literalmente, são familiares com] conhecem
==> drills = exercícios repetitivos para aprendizado
So, anyways, that's called "focused practice".
Another thing I tell my students to do is to go over the dialogues in their books. Listen to each sentence. Pause it; repeat it. You have to do that in a focused way.
It's different than when you're just talking... (I'll talk about that next week.)... when you're just using your English, that's one thing. Another thing is "focused practice".
That is, for example, where our product, our method on our site, comes in handy. We call it the "Método dos Missionários" that (where)... we have the whole story with all the phrasal verbs, but then you listen to each sentence, you hear it in Portuguese, then there's a beep, you have a little space there, then you have to say the word...ah...the sentence in English before you hear that answer.
==> come in hand = vir a calhar, ser útil
==> whole = inteira
That method there is to help you really practice and really get down (pat) those sentences.
==> get/have (a subject) down cold/pat = aprender/dominar completamente/perfeitamente (um assunto)
I have my students do that every week. I have them take home a chapter of one of the stories, and then they practice it during the week. And then they come to class, and I/we go over it together in class.
==> have my students do that = faço meus alunos fazerem isso
==> go over (a lesson) = verificar, revisar (uma lição, dever de casa, etc.)
Now I know that's not the be-all (and) end-all element of learning English; but it's a very important element. You have to have focused practice.
==> be-all and end-all = fator supremo/essencial/único
So do that! Try to incorporate every day some kind of focused practice in(to) your English studies. And I guarantee you that, in no time, you'll see a great improvement in your English.
Now I know it's not something that's fun. It's not fun for us piano players to play Hanon, either; but it's part of the process. And I guarantee you that if you do that you'll start seeing a difference in your English. When you finally do [este auxiliar "do" é usado para ênfase, como no caso acima] have to speak to someone, it will just come out a lot easier. Ok?
Well, expect me next week with a new tip. And have a great weekend! Bye bye! Thank you!
==> in no time = em um tempo muito curto
==> improvement = progresso; melhora
==> fun = divertido
==> come out easier = sair mais fácil
